LSSURP Outcome

After a long and wonderful summer at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, I finished my project with great results. Taking a look back at the last two months, I have come to realize the great experience that I have just concluded at the Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

The state of the art campus at the University of Minnesota Department of Pharmacology and the personalized education I had with my mentors not only provided me the experience needed to be competitive in the career that I wish to pursue. By doing my research I specialized on techniques such as: Differential Scanning Fluorimetry (DSF) using a Real Time PCR machine, heat shock transformation, protein purification using a HisTrap column, and protein induction. By helping my mentor with her thesis I also learned to do tissue culture; subculture, and transfection in human cancerous cells. All of the techniques mentioned before, with exception of transformation, were completely new to me, which made my research experience even more interesting.

Moreover, the Bioethics and Career Development weekly seminars taught me the importance of ethics and integrity in the health care/scientific career path. Also, the weekly small group seminar imparted me the tips to giving an outstanding scientific and poster presentations. This is why taking a look back to my time at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities has been one of the most outstanding experiences I have had as a undergraduate student, but most importantly, as in in individual. This is why I strongly believe that I now have a better future being an MD/PhD, and in the near future I will be able to assure my patients that they are in good hands.
