About me

Hello! Welcome to my blog! My name is Cristal I. Hernández-Hernández, I am twenty years old, and a Junior Biology Student at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. As a member of the National Honor Association of Biology, MEDLife Association, the PreMed Circle at UPRM, and most recently of the distinguished Phi Kappa Phi Honor Association, I have had the opportunity to visualize the huge need there is of medical treatment around the world, even in my own island. This is why I became interested in Biological Sciences, and most importantly, why during the summer of 2016 I am being part of the Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research at University of Minnesota (UMN)- Twin Cities.

Taking a look back to my time in community service, as a researcher, and as a shadowing student, I come to understand that medicine is the only field that gives me the chance to enjoy all of my passions at once. Hence, I decided to obtain an MD/PhD degree with the outcome of becoming a research doctor: one that could help society by contributing to science with research based on congenital/genetic disorders affecting people around the world. Nevertheless, I enjoy my free time by going to the movies or just relaxing with my family in my hometown, Moca, Puerto Rico. Still, I really enjoy being a student and expanding my wisdom by gaining life changing experiences the most that I can. Therefore, I have been preparing for my future profession by exploring a variety of science courses, especially on Genetics- the field which I mostly pursue in my career. Hence, this is why I am now part of the LSSURP- Heart, Lung, & Blood Summer Research Program at the UMN Twin Cities.
